How To Clean And Freshen Your Garbage Disposal
If you have noticed that there is a foul odor coming from your sink whenever you run the water or turn on the garbage disposal, the disposal is probably the culprit. Even if it is still working properly at grinding up food particles and sending them through the pipes, there could be bacteria or mold growing that is causing those odors. Regular cleaning of the garbage disposal will help it stay odor-free and prevent future issues with the disposal. You can clean it as often as you think is necessary, though it is a good idea to clean it about every week or so. The following methods will freshen it up.
Use Citrus Peels
If you have ever put pieces of citrus fruit down the drain and turned on the garbage disposal, you already know the sweet smell removes a lot of bad odors. It can also help to clean and freshen up the disposal and your sink drain. Take any citrus fruit, such an orange or lemon, and remove the peel. Cut up the peel into small pieces then dump them in the sink.
Turn the water on cold and push the peels down the sink drain, then turn on the garbage disposal. There are natural oils in the citrus peels that give off a pleasant smell and help to clean the garbage disposal. This method will only work if your disposal is working well and you don't have any type of clogs in your sink drains.
Make Your Own Cleaner
You can also make your own natural drain cleaning product by using baking soda and vinegar. Start by pouring a small amount of baking soda into the drain, then around the same amount of vinegar right after the baking soda. Take your drain stopper and use it to cover the drain while the baking soda and vinegar combine inside the sink drain. After several minutes, take the stopper off the drain and run hot water. While you run hot water, run the garbage disposal so the baking soda and vinegar can clean it out. Keep running the hot water while you are running the garbage disposal.
Use Ice and Vinegar
Another way to use vinegar for cleaning out your garbage disposal is by combining it with ice. Garbage disposals work great when you use cold water to clean them. Start by pouring a handful of ice cubes down your sink, then pour some vinegar into the drain. Turn on the garbage disposal and let it run for several minutes, letting it cut the ice cubes as they work to clean the disposal. The vinegar adds to the cleaning properties, as well as freshening the odors. After a few seconds, turn off the garbage disposal and run cold water to rinse out the drain.
